Heavy Rains Trigger Deadly Floods Across Senegal

Torrential rains and flash floods have killed and injured several people in Senegal, leaving parts of the capital, Dakar, submerged.

The Ministry of Interior confirmed the casualties after heavy rainfall affected Dakar and other parts of the country on Monday.

In Matam, a 25-year-old woman and her four-year-old child died when a wall collapsed during the downpour.

Some areas recorded more than 140 millimetres of rainfall in a single day, causing widespread damage to infrastructure and disrupting transportation.

The flooding comes just weeks before Senegal hosts the Youth Olympics, scheduled to begin on October 31.

Authorities have warned residents to expect more rainfall in the coming days and urged people in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant.

President Bassirou Diomaye Faye expressed condolences to the families of the victims and said the government had mobilised resources to strengthen emergency response and vigilance in vulnerable areas.
