The Inspector General of Police (IGP), IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, in his continued effort to curb insecurity across Nigeria, has called for deeper collaboration and partnership with relevant stakeholders, including traditional rulers and president generals, to curb insecurity in Anambra communities.

The IGP made this call during a one-day stakeholders’ discussion and engagement on security held at the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre in Awka on Tuesday, 23 June 2026.

The IGP, ably represented by the DIG in charge of the South-East geographic zone, Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, led the strategic stakeholders’ engagement, which attracted heads of security agencies, members of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, vigilante groups, transport unions, civil society organisations, media practitioners, representatives of the Northern community and Anambra State government officials.

Speaking at the event, the DIG said the initiative, which is being replicated across the 6 geopolitical zones in Nigeria, was designed to provide a platform for stakeholders to deliberate on prevailing security challenges, identify emerging threats and develop practical solutions to improve intelligence sharing, community participation and coordinated security responses.

Onwuemelie stressed that effective policing depends largely on public support and cooperation, urging residents and stakeholders to work closely with security agencies through timely information sharing and active participation in community-based security initiatives.

Earlier, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Ibrahim Ezekiel, described security as the bedrock of economic growth, sustainable development and social harmony. He noted that the command, in collaboration with other security agencies, had recorded significant successes in crime reduction through intelligence-led policing and community partnership initiatives.

He further emphasised the need for enhanced intelligence gathering, stronger community policing structures and increased public support for security agencies, expressing confidence that the engagement would yield actionable recommendations to further strengthen security and boost public confidence in law enforcement across the state.

As part of his operational visit to the state, the DIG paid a courtesy call on the traditional ruler of Awka Kingdom, Igwe Gibson Nwosu (Eze Uzu II of Awka), in recognition of the critical role of traditional institutions in promoting peace, resolving conflicts and supporting grassroots intelligence gathering.

The monarch commended the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their efforts in maintaining security across Anambra State and pledged the continued support of the traditional institution towards ensuring a safer environment for residents.

In her vote of thanks, the Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State Chapter, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika thanked the IGP for the initiative on security collaboration, called for greater inclusion of women in security discussions and urged sustained police engagement with the public to address emerging security concerns.

The stakeholders’ engagement reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to fostering stronger partnerships with critical stakeholders as part of ongoing efforts to enhance security, promote public trust and sustain peace across the South-East region.
