The world on Saturday marked the International Day of Charity, with the United Nations highlighting the importance of generosity, volunteerism and humanitarian action in addressing poverty, suffering and other challenges confronting vulnerable communities.
Observed annually on September 5, the day was designated by the UN General Assembly in 2012 in recognition of the role of charity in alleviating humanitarian crises and human suffering.
In Nigeria, this year’s theme is “Charity for a Better World”.
Nigeria’s Firts Lady, Oluremi Tinubu in a message to mark the day, called on Nigerians and stakeholders to extend a helping hand in order to restore hope, and support those in need.
“As the world marks International Day of Charity 2026, we are reminded of the power of kindness, compassion, and generosity in building a more caring and inclusive society,” she said.
Mrs Tinubu urged citizens to embrace giving and volunteerism, especially to the less privileged, as a means to reduce poverty and strengthen communities.
“Through our collective action, we can help reduce poverty, strengthen our communities, and ensure that no one is left behind,” she said.
The date also commemorates the death of Mother Teresa, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who died on September 5, 1997, after dedicating much of her life to helping poor and vulnerable people, according to informarion published on the UN website.
The UN said charity encompasses more than financial donations, stressing that contributions of time, volunteer service, compassion and other forms of support can help strengthen communities and promote human solidarity.
The observance comes as humanitarian needs remain significant in several parts of the world, including Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, United States and other continents, where conflict, displacement, environmental shocks, disease outbreaks and food insecurity continue to place pressure on vulnerable populations.

The United Nations in Nigeria has also stressed the importance of strengthening national and community-led humanitarian responses, particularly as international humanitarian funding faces increasing constraints.
The International Day of Charity therefore serves as a reminder that addressing humanitarian needs requires collective action involving governments, charitable organisations, civil society groups, communities and individuals.
As countries mark the day, the UN’s message is that acts of generosity and solidarity can contribute to easing human suffering and advancing efforts to build more inclusive and resilient societies.
