ITF J30 Juniors: Ogunsakin Opens Week-2 With Victory

Nigerian tennis sensation, Seyi Ogunsakin, made an impressive start to his second-week campaign at the 2026 ITF J30 World Tennis Tour Junior Championship in Nigeria.

At the Tennis Complex of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Ogunsakin defeated Joseph Ogbole 6-2, 6-0 in the opening Group A boys’ singles match in Abuja. Ogunsakin, the boys’ doubles champion in week one, broke Ogbole early and maintained control throughout the match.

He raced to a straight-sets victory to finish Day One at the top of Group A. The second week of the championship began on Monday. Ogunsakin is competing in Group A alongside Awal Jaji, Shalom Danhouan of Benin Republic and Ogbole.

In another Group A fixture, Jaji recovered from a set down to defeat Danhouan 1-6, 6-2, 10-7. Ogunsakin entered the second week in strong form following an impressive first-week performance.

He topped Group A to reach the quarter-finals and defeated Segun Monday 6-1, 6-3. His campaign ended in the semi-finals after a 1-6, 2-6 defeat to Elisha Kwange. Ogbole finished runner-up in Group B during the first week.

However, he narrowly missed a quarter-final place as only group winners progressed. Jaji and Danhouan did not feature during the opening week of the competition.

Elsewhere in the boys’ singles, first-week champion Hengzhi Cui of China defeated Ismail Shuaibu 6-0, 6-1. Mohammed Abdullahi beat Johanes Mbam 6-0, 6-1, while Iyanuoluwa Taiwo overcame Wisdom Effiong 6-3, 6-3.

Jinxuan Chong defeated Olorun-Damilola Agunbiade 6-1, 6-0. Elliott Awomoyi of the United States beat Abdulbaasit Salami 6-3, 6-1. Elisha Kwange defeated Segun Monday 6-0, 6-3. India’s Jagruth Kasireddy also overcame Umar Omaye 7-6, 6-1.

In the girls’ singles, Sri Lanka’s Rashmi Wijewardana defeated Jamila John 6-4, 6-2. Opeyemi Oladimeji beat Blessing Peter 6-1, 6-1.

Toluwalashe Agunbiade recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Oluwadarasimi. Destiny Tomozayi defeated Inioluwa Wole-Ajayi 6-1, 6-1. In the girls’ doubles round of 16, four pairs received first-round byes into the quarter-finals.

They are Emmanuella Kwange and Success Ogunjobi, Daisy Okechukwu and Gloria Samuel, Toluwalashe Agunbiade and Roneta Kacinskaite. Kadijat Mohammed and Rashmi Wijewardana also progressed directly to the last eight.

Players in both boys’ and girls’ events were drawn into eight groups, A to H. Each group contains four players competing in a round-robin format. Group winners advance to the quarter-finals before progressing to the semi-finals and final.

A total of 14 countries are participating in the second week of the championship. They include Nigeria, Cameroon, China, Great Britain, Canada, Sri Lanka, Liberia, Lithuania, India, Togo, Benin Republic, the United States, Sweden and France.
