Kaduna Assembly Considers De-merger of Nursing College Campuses

Murjanatu Abdullahi, Kaduna

Kaduna State House of Assembly is considering the de-merger of the Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery campuses to address administrative challenges and improve the quality of nursing and midwifery education in the state.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Henry Danjuma, who presided over plenary, indicated that the existing law establishing the institution would be reviewed to pave the way for its amendment and possible re-enactment.

Speaking to journalists after plenary, the member representing Jema’a Constituency, Ali Kalat, disclosed that he was preparing a bill to reverse the merger of the college’s three campuses following challenges associated with their administration.

Kalat explained that the merger, introduced by a previous administration to improve institutional performance, had created difficulties in coordination, funding and effective management.

He noted that the Provost operates from the Tudun Wada campus, while the Kafanchan and Pambegua campuses are managed by deputy provosts, a structure he said had affected communication and the timely release of operational funds.

The lawmaker maintained that restoring the campuses’ independence would enable them to manage their resources more effectively, address infrastructure challenges and improve the standard of professional training.

He added that the Speaker had directed him to present the existing law to facilitate its review, while relevant House committees would examine the proposed amendments before the bill proceeds through the legislative process. Look
