Kaduna Assembly Moves to Regulate Private Health Facilities

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has commenced consideration of three bills seeking to regulate private health facilities, clarify the tenure of the State Auditor-General and strengthen investment laws.

One of the bills passed the second reading, while two others were presented for first reading.

The member representing Zaria City Constituency, Mahmud Ismaila, said the proposed Kaduna State Private Health Facility Regulatory Agency Bill would check the proliferation of unlicensed and unqualified health facilities across the state.

Ismaila, who is Chairman of the House Committee on Education, said the proposed agency would license and regulate private health facilities and ensure they meet required standards.

Unaccredited Health Institutions

He said the legislation would also protect students from enrolling in unaccredited health institutions, which sometimes force them to travel to other states for examinations.

The lawmaker said the second bill seeks to provide clear provisions for the tenure and removal of the Auditor-General,

According to Ismaila, the bill seeks to amend the existing law so as to provide clearly defined provisions for the tenure and removal of the Auditor-General, in line with the Constitution and applicable state laws.

He said that the third seeks to amend the Kaduna State Investment and Promotion Law in order to improve investment regulation and attract more investors.

The Lawmaker added that the health facility bill would be subjected to further scrutiny by relevant committees, with medical practitioners and other stakeholders expected to contribute during a public hearing.
