The Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to upholding Press freedom and strengthening democratic values.

This comes as the State joins the global community in commemorating World Press Freedom Day 2026.

The 2026 celebration, themed “Shaping a Future at Peace,” is being marked worldwide, with key reflections anchored by a conference organised by UNESCO in Lusaka, Zambia.

The theme highlights the critical role of a free, responsible, and independent media in fostering peace, protecting human rights, and advancing sustainable development, especially amid rising concerns over misinformation and threats to freedom of expression.

In Kaduna State, the media continues to play a vital role in democratic governance by informing citizens, shaping public discourse, and promoting accountability.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki said; “the administration of Governor Uba remains committed to protecting the constitutional rights of journalists, ensuring they operate in a safe and enabling environment without undue interference.”

Speaking on the occasion, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, emphasised that the Governor’s stance reflects a deep belief in the importance of credible journalism.

“Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to press freedom reflects a firm belief that a free, responsible, and credible media is indispensable to peace, good governance, and democratic stability, as well as an informed and engaged society,” Maiyaki said.

He further stressed that in an era where misinformation and disinformation threaten public trust, social cohesion, and national security, the need for ethical and professional journalism has become increasingly urgent.

The Commissioner said; “As misinformation and disinformation threaten public trust and national cohesion, ethical, accurate, and professional journalism remains non-negotiable. Kaduna State will continue to protect journalists while promoting integrity and accountability in the media space.”

The state government also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding media practitioners while encouraging adherence to professional standards, fact-checking, and responsible reporting.

The Ministry of Information and Culture pledged to strengthen collaboration with media stakeholders, support capacity-building initiatives, and promote efforts aimed at countering misinformation while enhancing the credibility of journalism.
