The award was presented during the festival’s closing ceremony.

Organisers said Governor Yusuf was recognised for his outstanding commitment to the development of Nigeria’s film industry, especially Kannywood, the Hausa-language film sector based in Kano.

Presenting the award, AIFF founder Fidelis Duker praised the governor’s efforts in revitalising the creative industry through infrastructure development, capacity building, and other progressive initiatives.

He noted that the Kano State Government has remained a steadfast supporter of the festival, which is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading film events that continues to redefine the nation’s cinematic landscape.

In his remarks, Governor Abba Yusuf, represented by Mr. Ibrahim Waiya, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, expressed appreciation to the AIFF for the honour.

“This is truly a well-deserved recognition. Under my administration, Kano State has provided maximum support for the growth and development of the film industry,” he said.

“As the home of Kannywood, we have ensured an enabling environment through improved security and infrastructure.”

The Abuja International Film Festival is an annual event that brings together actors, filmmakers, investors, and policymakers, promoting Nigerian cinema on the global stage. The festival features film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, masterclasses, and award presentations.

According to the organisers, this year’s edition received 1,687 film entries from 87 countries, out of which 71 outstanding films were selected to compete for various awards.

Nollywood film “Safari” emerged the biggest winner of the night, clinching the Golden Jury Award for Overall Best Film.
