The Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) generated N63.08 billion in revenue between January and June 2026, representing a 7.4 per cent increase compared to the N58.39 billion recorded during the corresponding period in 2025.

Acting Customs Area Controller, Deputy Comptroller of Customs Usman Adamu, disclosed this during a media briefing at the Customs House in Bompai, Kano.

According to him, the command’s improved performance was driven by administrative reforms, enhanced monitoring systems, intelligence-led operations and stronger stakeholder engagement.

“The Command generated N63.08 billion from January to June 2026, surpassing the N58.39 billion generated during the corresponding period of 2025, representing a growth of about 7.4 per cent despite the decline in cargo throughput,” Adamu said.

He revealed that the Kano Free Trade Zone generated more than N26 billion during the six months, exceeding its total revenue for the whole of 2025 by about N4 billion.

The acting controller also disclosed that the command recovered approximately N3 billion through measures aimed at curbing the abuse of transit procedures.

On anti-smuggling operations, Adamu said intelligence-driven enforcement activities resulted in the seizure of prohibited, restricted and controlled goods with a combined Duty Paid Value (DPV) of more than N1.71 billion.

The items seized included unregistered pharmaceutical products, four air pistols, elephant tusks, imported vegetable oil, military uniforms and equipment, diverted transit containers, smuggled vehicles, foreign rice, spaghetti, macaroni, counterfeit agrochemical packaging materials and a drone imported without the required End User Certificate.

He said 22 suspects were arrested in connection with the seizures, with some handed over to relevant security and regulatory agencies for further investigation, while others were granted administrative bail.

Adamu further disclosed that customs operatives intercepted undeclared foreign currencies and precious metals at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport.

The seized items included 568,100 US dollars, 134,256 Saudi Riyals, 28 Chinese Yuan, 20 Ghana Cedis and 35 kilograms of silver bars valued at about N175 million.

According to him, the interception formed part of efforts to enforce the Anti-Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act and combat illicit financial flows.

“These remarkable achievements and significant interceptions did not occur by chance. They were the result of deliberate and well-coordinated strategies deployed by the Command earlier in the year,” he said.

Adamu explained that the command strengthened transit monitoring through an end-to-end dispatch system, streamlined border revenue collection, enhanced anti-smuggling surveillance, reviewed cargo clearance procedures at bonded terminals, improved compliance within the Kano Free Trade Zone and introduced a real-time revenue monitoring dashboard.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to facilitating legitimate trade while protecting the nation’s economy through sustained intelligence-led operations and stakeholder collaboration.

The acting controller also commended the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, security agencies, stakeholders and the media for their support in achieving the command’s objectives.
