Kano NIPR Seeks Support for World PR Forum

By Hauwa Mustapha, Kano

The Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Kano State Chapter, has embarked on a sensitisation walk to the Kano State Government House ahead of the World Public Relations Forum scheduled for November 15 to 21, 2026 in Abuja.

Leading the delegation, a lecturer at Bayero University Kano, Sule Ya’u Sule, said the walk was organised to raise awareness about the global forum and formally inform the Kano State Government of the event.

He said the forum would bring together public relations practitioners from across the world to examine emerging trends in the profession, including the need to review the definition of public relations adopted in Mexico in 1978.

Sule said; “the definition had remained a reference point for practitioners for decades despite significant changes in the profession.”

He explained that the Kano chapter ended the sensitisation walk at the Government House to convey the message to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf through the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Responding, Dawakin Tofa described the visit as a gathering of professional colleagues and said public relations practitioners played an important role in promoting peace, transparency, professionalism and development.

He said; “Governor Yusuf had expressed readiness to support Kano’s participation in the World Public Relations Forum and directed the NIPR state chapter to submit a request for land for the construction of a befitting NIPR facility in the state.”

The Director-General also said the Governor had pledged continued support for the welfare, safety, training and retraining of public relations practitioners in Kano.

According to him, “the state government was ready to partner with the NIPR at the national and state levels to strengthen professionalism and promote adherence to ethical standards.”

Dawakin Tofa said the government had spent more than N200 million in 2025 on support and engagements involving various categories of media and public relations practitioners, while more than N150 million had been spent in 2026 on welfare interventions.

He said; “the interventions included mobility support, working equipment, accommodation and medical assistance for media and public relations professionals.”

Dawakin Tofa said that legitimate requests from the NIPR, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Correspondents Chapel would be considered by the state government for onward approval by the governor.

He also announced that the Kano State Government would sponsor a Northwest Regional Media Security Summit scheduled to take place at the Government House the following week.

The Chairman of NIPR Kano State Chapter, Aliyu Yusuf, thanked Governor Yusuf for the support and pledged the chapter’s continued commitment to professionalism in public relations.
