The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the Kano State Government have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s statistical system and promoting the use of reliable data for effective policymaking and governance.
The commitment was made during the first Bi-Annual Meeting of the National Consultative Committee on Statistics (NCCS) for 2026 in Kano State, with the theme: “Unlocking Data Dividends for National Development: Advancing Administrative Statistics and Data-Driven Governance.”
The Statistician-General of the NBS, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran, highlighted the changing nature of Nigeria’s statistical landscape and the growing demand for timely, credible and disaggregated data.
“As the coordinator of the National Statistical System, NBS will continue to work with stakeholders across the country to strengthen statistical systems, promote innovation and improve access to data,” he said
The Statistician General stressed the importance of ensuring that statistics are effectively used to support evidence-based decision-making and national development.
Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, said reliable and timely data was essential to addressing citizens’ needs, allocating resources and measuring the impact of government programmes.
Governor Yusuf described statistics as the foundation for sound public policy, effective planning and accountable governance, stressing that governments cannot properly plan or evaluate development interventions without accurate information.
A press statement by the Governor’s Chief press Secretary, Muhammad Mustapha said, the meeting brought together key stakeholders in Nigeria’s statistical system to strengthen coordination and promote the use of reliable data in national and sub-national development planning.
