Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has flagged off a multi-million-naira erosion control project in the Badariya and Dukku Mallah communities of Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area, to address persistent environmental challenges threatening lives, property and farmlands.
Governor Idris said the flag-off ceremony underscores the state government’s commitment to tackling environmental degradation and protecting vulnerable communities from the devastating effects of erosion.
He expressed confidence that the project, upon completion, would provide a lasting solution to erosion problems in the affected communities and improve the environmental landscape of Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.
The Governor explained that although the project was not part of his campaign promises, his administration considered the intervention necessary because of its importance to the safety, welfare and economic well-being of the affected communities.
He said the project was being implemented under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) initiative, a World Bank-assisted programme aimed at addressing environmental degradation and strengthening resilience in vulnerable landscapes.

The governor assured residents that his administration would ensure effective supervision and monitoring of the project to guarantee compliance with approved specifications, quality standards and timely completion.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to implementing people-oriented projects that address the needs of communities, improve living conditions and stimulate economic activities across Kebbi State.
Governor Idris urged residents of the benefiting communities to cooperate with the contractor and relevant project officials to ensure the smooth execution of the project.
He also called on them to take collective responsibility for protecting and maintaining the infrastructure after completion.
Residents of the affected communities commended the governor for the intervention, describing it as timely relief from the persistent threat erosion poses to their homes, farmlands and livelihoods.
