The member representing Enugu North/Enugu South Federal Constituency, Sam Atu, has commended Governor Peter Mbah and the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) for strengthening grassroots democracy through regular local government elections.
Atu spoke after casting his vote at Polling Unit 5, Ward 10, Community Primary School, Ugwuaji Awkunaw, Enugu, on Saturday, during the ENSIEC-conducted elections for 17 chairmanship and 260 councillorship positions across the state.
He said the regular conduct of council elections under the Mbah administration had promoted inclusion and increased citizens’ participation in governance.
The lawmaker also commended the Governor’s investments in education, healthcare, security and other basic amenities, saying the initiatives had enhanced the people’s sense of belonging.
Atu said he had complemented the state government’s development efforts in his constituency through road construction, street-lighting projects, educational scholarships, vocational training and empowerment programmes.
He described the performance of the Enugu South Local Government Chairman, Chief Caleb Ani, as commendable, citing rural road construction and social intervention programmes implemented with his deputy and councillors.
“We are supporting his re-election for a second term for him to implement more developmental projects for our people and support our governor on the beautiful and statewide projects being executed,” he said.
Atu also said the All Progressives Congress (APC) would continue to mobilise support for its candidates across the state.
He further commended ENSIEC for conducting what he described as a peaceful, seamless and transparent election, while appreciating the security agencies and the media for their professional roles.
“ENSIEC performed exceptionally well in this election, which is judged the most peaceful and friendly in recent times,” he said..
