Libya’s rival administrations have agreed to hold elections within the next two years in an effort to reunite the country.
After months of United Nations-backed talks, representatives from Libya’s eastern and western authorities, known as the 4+4 Committee, signed an agreement on Sunday.

The agreement aims to restructure the country’s electoral commission and resolve disagreements over electoral laws.
Vice-President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Moussa Al-Koni, said the agreement could help the country move towards ending its political division.
“Our participation today is in support of a political opportunity that must be safeguarded and built upon.”
He added: “An opportunity that will move Libya to managing division and from merely waiting for elections to making tangible progress towards them.”
Abdul Rahman Al-Abbar, a member of the 4+4 Committee representing the eastern administration, also welcomed the agreement.
“Today, in this important forum, with the signing of the results, this is the culmination of work carried out by men who have acted with genuine national interests.
Libya fell into chaos after longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi was overthrown in 2011.
The country has since been divided between two governments: Abdulhamid Dbeibah’s internationally recognised Government of National Unity in the west and Khalifa Haftar’s rival Government of National Stability in the east.
Talks aimed at reunifying the country reportedly began late last year after both sides asked Pakistan to mediate.
