The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) has handed over a newly commissioned Animal Resting and Quarantine Facility in Imeko-Afon, Ogun State, to the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) for operation and management.
The facility is designed to provide a safe and controlled environment for livestock moving through the area, allowing animals to rest, access water and undergo necessary inspection before continuing their journey.
Animals requiring further attention can also be examined and quarantined at the facility where necessary, strengthening efforts to monitor livestock movement and prevent the spread of animal diseases, particularly around border communities.

In addition to the physical infrastructure, the facility is equipped with digital platforms designed to support livestock movement, facility operations and asset monitoring.
A key component is the digital route and movement guide, which provides information on livestock routes and corridors linking the facility with national livestock route corridors, primary stock routes and local livestock movement paths.
According to L-PRES Communication/ICT Unit, the platform will provide herders and livestock traders with directions and information on recognised routes and resting points along their journeys, helping to discourage movement through inappropriate areas and promote the use of established livestock routes.

The digital system will also enable the monitoring of infrastructure and other assets at the facility, allowing responsible officers to track their condition and utilisation.
With the handover, trained quarantine officers of NAQS will assume responsibility for the day-to-day management of the facility and the proper use of its physical and digital resources.
The Imeko-Afon facility is part of L-PRES investments aimed at improving animal health services, strengthening livestock infrastructure, promoting safer livestock movement and deploying digital technology to support livestock management across Nigeria.
