The medical team deployed for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna State, Northwest Nigeria, says it has put adequate measures in place to address medical emergencies that may arise during the event.
The team said it has mobilised healthcare personnel from tertiary, secondary and primary healthcare facilities to provide medical services to participants and ensure prompt responses to emergencies throughout the campaign.
A medical doctor with the presidential campaign’s health unit, Dr. Danga Emmanuel, disclosed this during an interview at the campaign flag-off in Kaduna.
Dr. Emmanuel explained that “medical clinics had been established at the venue to provide immediate treatment for participants who might require medical attention.”
He said patients with conditions that could not be managed at the temporary clinics would be transported by ambulance to designated referral hospitals for further treatment.
According to him, ‘referral facilities, including Barau Diko, Yusuf Dantsoho, Gomna Awan General Hospital, had been activated to support the medical team and ensure that patients requiring specialised care received appropriate attention.”
The doctor said that the team had conducted a simulation exercise a day before the event to test its level of preparedness and ability to respond effectively to possible emergencies.
He stressed that the exercise was part of efforts to ensure that healthcare workers, ambulances and referral facilities were ready to handle any unforeseen medical situation during the campaign.
Dr. Emmanuel noted that “the medical cases recorded so far were mostly minor injuries associated with the large crowd at the venue.”
He explained that some participants had sustained bruises or injuries from falls, while others experienced conditions such as low blood sugar, medically known as hypoglycaemia.
The doctor said the medical team was managing the cases and remained prepared to attend to additional patients should the need arise.
Dr. Emmanuel reiterated that the health unit was monitoring the situation and would continue to provide medical assistance throughout the campaign to safeguard the well-being of participants.
The deployment of healthcare personnel, emergency ambulances, temporary clinics and activated referral facilities forms part of the medical arrangements aimed at ensuring a prompt response to health emergencies during the political gathering.
