Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has called on bloggers, online publishers and digital content creators to embrace ethical journalism, responsible storytelling and fact-based reporting.
Speaking at the Niger State Bloggers, Online Publishers and Content Developers Forum in Abuja on Monday, the minister said while digital media has created unprecedented opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship and civic participation, it also places a greater responsibility on content creators to promote truth, national unity and informed public discourse.
“There is no democracy that can thrive without a responsible media. You cannot carry freedom and abandon responsibility,” Idris said.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to press freedom, noting that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recognises the important role of the media in deepening democracy while encouraging practitioners to uphold the highest ethical standards.
The Information Minister urged bloggers and social media influencers to verify information before publishing, resist the temptation to spread misinformation and disinformation, avoid sensationalism, and use their platforms to educate, inspire and contribute positively to national development.
“Verify information before publication, reject misinformation and disinformation, avoid sensationalism, and use your platforms to educate, inspire and promote national development,” he urged.
According to Idris, young Nigerians should view digital content creation not only as a means of earning a living but also as a powerful instrument for civic engagement and nation-building.
“Ethical communication is essential to strengthening democracy and building public trust,” he noted.
The Minister also highlighted the establishment of the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI), describing it as a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s efforts to promote digital literacy and responsible online engagement.
He said the institute, the world’s first UNESCO Category 2 Institute dedicated exclusively to Media and Information Literacy, would equip media practitioners and citizens with the skills needed to navigate the digital information ecosystem responsibly.
Idris encouraged aspiring bloggers, online publishers and digital entrepreneurs to continue developing their professional skills and adhere to ethical standards that would enhance the credibility of Nigeria’s online media industry.
The Information Minister stressed that responsible journalism and ethical digital communication remain indispensable to fostering an informed citizenry, strengthening democratic institutions and promoting national cohesion.
