Minister Urges African Women to Embrace Empowerment

Nigeria’s Minister for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim has called on African women to embrace empowerment, describing it as a vital tool for sustainable development.

Suleiman-Ibrahim stated this at the Global Africa’s Women Sustainability Conference 2.0 organised by ImpactHer in Abuja, Nigeria capital city.

She said; “We gather today not as representatives of different agencies but as an single heartbeat echoing from the shores of the Atlantic to the vibrant heat of Abuja ready to rethink our limits, reinvent our paths and regenerate the very soul of our economic landscape.Knowing that when a woman rises,she carries the hope of an entire generation on her shoulders.”

She further reiterated that the Transformative renewed hope Agenda of Pres.Bola Ahmed Tinubu is aimed at ensuring that the female population of the country become the engine room for the African continental Trade Area.

“The Presidential declaration of 2026 as the year of families and social development is a landmark policy that elevates the centrality of family as the foundation of national stability and social development. The Africa we want will be possible with the empowerment of women,” the Minister noted.

The Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike who was represented by the Minster of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure said, “across Africa women are at the forefront of enterprise. Women are not only participating in economic activities but they are also redefining them.

“Empowering women is paramount and our administration is committed to create an enabling environment where women can thrive, have access to infrastructure targeted at capacity building.”

The President and Founder of ImpactHER, Bar. Efe Ukala said that women are the architects of global sustainable future.

“Global African Women are not asking for permission to lead sustainable conversations, we are already leading .The question is if the world system will catch up with what our women know. We will create and make an impact in our world,” She said.

In a written goodwill message, the Director General of the African Union Commission, His excellency Ambassador, Fathallah Sijilmassi said, “The African Union Commission remains firmly committed to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in line with Agenda 2063 and broader continental priorities.”

The three-day event brought together stakeholders, professionals, and women advocates from across Africa and beyond to discuss key issues, share experiences, and develop strategies aimed at strengthening systems that promote sustainable empowerment and advancement for women.
