MPB Chairman Urges Veterans on Unity, Accurate Media Reporting

By, Martha Obi, Abuja

The Chairman of the Military Pensions Board (MPB), Air Vice Marshal Mikail Abdulraheem, has called on military veterans to unite in advocating for their welfare, while urging journalists to verify allegations against the board before publication.

Abdulraheem made the call in Abuja when he received a delegation from the Defence Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DECAN), led by its President, Odita Sunday, on a courtesy visit.

He urged journalists to seek clarification from the board before publishing negative reports, assuring them that its management was willing to provide relevant information and address concerns about its operations.

“Any time you hear something negative about the board, please never be in a hurry to publish. Verify from the board, and we are ready to speak to you,” he said.

The chairman stressed that accurate and responsible reporting was important to maintaining public confidence in the board and protecting the future pension interests of serving military personnel.

He also encouraged journalists to uphold professionalism, objectivity and constructive engagement in reporting military pension issues.

Veterans Welfare

On veterans’ welfare, Abdulraheem called for a strong, united association that could represent retired military personnel and engage the government on pension adjustments, benefits and other welfare concerns.

He said divisions among veterans could weaken their collective voice, adding that a united body would be better positioned to present their concerns to political leaders and presidential aspirants, particularly during election periods.

Abdulraheem also acknowledged the importance of constructive criticism in improving leadership and institutional performance. He thanked the DECAN delegation for its visit and goodwill, while urging Nigerians to promote national unity through responsible leadership and constructive engagement.

Earlier, DECAN President Odita Sunday commended the MPB chairman’s efforts on veterans’ welfare and called for greater public awareness of pension laws, entitlements and retirement benefits.

Sunday said improved sensitisation would help serving personnel and retirees understand their rights, obligations and available channels for resolving complaints, thereby reducing avoidable disputes and protests.

He reaffirmed DECAN’s commitment to working with the board to promote national development and protect the welfare of retired military personnel.
