Afrobeats singer Mr Eazi has claimed that Chelsea FC considered signing him before the English club secured the services of former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel.
The singer made the disclosure during an interview with The Beat FM on Wednesday, monitored by The Nation, recalling that both he and Mikel were linked to a possible move to the Premier League club.
“They were gonna sign me. So, it was like Mikel Obi and me,” Mr Eazi stated.
The singer explained that he believed Mikel was better suited to football, while his own future lay in music. He said the decision reflected his approach to the music industry, where he was sometimes willing to step aside and allow others to shine.
“So with this, with the music too, I had to, like, step back, go make a couple billions and then let other people shine,” he said.
Mikel joined Chelsea in 2006 and spent 11 years at the club, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the UEFA Champions League in 2012.
Mr Eazi has since built a career in Afrobeats, alongside business ventures and efforts to promote the genre internationally.
