Nasarawa Governor Approves ₦2 Billion For Pension Arrears

Amina Mohammed, Lafia

The Nasarawa State Government has approved the sum of 2 billion naira for the payment of arrears of pensions and other entitlements owed to retirees in the state.

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Public Affairs, Mr Peter Ahemba, disclosed this during the state government’s bi-monthly press briefing in Lafia on Wednesday.

Ahemba said the approval was in line with Governor Sule’s determination to ensure that pensioners in the state do not suffer in accessing what is due to them.

“His Excellency has again approved the sum of two billion naira to be used for the payment of arrears of pensions and other entitlements,” he said.

According to him, the last payment covered retirees up to around 2012, while the new approval will cover from 2013 up to the present.

“There was a payment that ended around 2012 or thereabouts for those who retired within that period. So, this new approval will now cover from 2013 up to the present, depending on the arrangements the pension board will work out to fine-tune the process,” Ahemba explained.

He noted that the state government is working with the Nasarawa State Pension Board to finalise the modalities for disbursement, stressing that the commitment is aimed at reducing the backlog of pension liabilities in the state.

“The truth of the matter is that because His Excellency is determined to ensure that whatever is due to our pensioners is given to them as and when due, so our pensioners do not suffer in getting what is due to them, he has decided to again make that commitment,” he added.

The SSA assured that details of the payment schedule would be released by the Pension Board in due course.
