Nasarawa Govt Moves to Relocate Flood-Affected Communities

By Amina Mohammed, Lafia

The Nasarawa State Government says all is now set to procure land for vulnerable flood-prone communities across the state.

The Director General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency (NASEMA), Mr. Benjamin Akwash, stated this while briefing journalists on the agency’s one-year achievements in Lafia, the state capital.

He explained that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to mitigate the long-standing impact of flooding on communities located along the banks of the River Benue.

He noted that, over the years, many residents in riverine areas had been reluctant to relocate to safer locations due to cultural attachments to ancestral lands and the lack of suitable alternatives.

However, he attributed the recent progress to the administration of Governor Abdullahi Sule, noting that intensified government sensitisation campaigns are yielding positive results, with more residents showing willingness to comply with relocation directives.

The DG further revealed that the agency has significantly improved its emergency response time to flood and fire incidents, now ranging between 24 and 48 hours.

He said the agency has distributed relief materials worth over one hundred million naira across the state between 2025 and 2026.

Akwash added that food and non-food items were distributed to cushion the suffering of over 3,000 households affected by windstorms, floods, communal clashes, and fire outbreaks.
