The new Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development (NCWD), Dr. Asabe Vilita Bashir, has pledge to re-structure”, “re-position” and “re-brand” the Centre, for optimum results, towards empowering the Nigerian women and for overall National Development.
At her formal take-over on Monday in Abuja, she promised to bring her wealth of experience to bear, so that the Centre can further gain both wider national and international recognitions.
She said, “I stand before you today, to declare that the NCWD is now a “New Born Baby”, therefore, we must nurture it together. In this regard, let us stand up as patriots, to further nurture her; to further protect her; and to further develop her together’’.
She added “Being a strong advocate of gender equality and women’s rights; under my leadership, the Centre will further synergise and continue to collaborate with all relevant Women Organizations and stakeholders, both nationally and internationally, to ensure that the challenges hindering women emancipation and development are drastically combated”.
The DG also said she will tap all the required resources and ensure that a very friendly and progressive working environment is provided for the teeming work-force, for optimum productivity and greater results to be achieved; particularly, in the area of Internal Revenue Generation.
Dr Bashir pledged that she would work towards consensus with all segments of society including relevant government agencies, financial institutions of which the Central Bank is key, international organisations such as the UN-Women, European Union, ECOWAS, and civil society amongst others.
“We will work towards deepening women engagement in politics especially as we head towards 2023 general elections.”
Her appointment
President Muhammadu Buhari on February 15, 2021, approved the appointment of Dr Asabe Vilita-Bashir as the new Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development, NCWD.
The appointment was made known in a statement signed by the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Pauline Tallen, on Friday in Abuja.
According to the statement, Dr Asabe Vilita-Bashir will take over the mantle of leadership of NCWD on April 12, from Mrs Mary Ekpere-Ita, who has completed her term in office.
The new D-G hails from Gwoza Local Government area of Borno state.
She obtained a first degree in Chemistry and Mathematics in 1988 from the University of Maiduguri and a Ph.D in Educational Philosophy.
In 1999, Vilita-Bashir was elected into the Borno State House of Assembly and was re-elected in 2003.
She was appointed as a member of the Borno State Executive Council in 2005.
