NCoS Contains Cholera Outbreak at Kano Custodial Centre

By Vin Oliji, Abuja

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) says it has brought a recent cholera outbreak at the Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kano State under control.

The service said the outbreak was confirmed through laboratory investigations conducted on Sept. 23 by its medical team in collaboration with Kano State public health authorities.

In a statement, the Service Public Relations Officer, Jane Osuji, said the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, was immediately briefed and directed that necessary measures be sustained to protect the health and welfare of inmates and personnel.

The NCoS, however, said two inmates died during the outbreak, with one death occurring at the custodial centre and the other at the Kano State Infectious Diseases Hospital.

“The Controller-General extends heartfelt condolences over the unfortunate loss of lives,” Osuji said.

She said the incident was first detected on Sept. 17 after an inmate developed vomiting and diarrhoea and was admitted to the centre’s medical facility for treatment.

“By the next morning, the medical team immediately activated emergency medical protocols while intensifying medical intervention and monitoring,” she said.

According to Osuji, the coordinated response helped contain the outbreak, with no further deaths recorded since the diagnosis.

She said additional preventive measures had also been introduced in collaboration with the Kano State Government to reduce the risk of further infections.

Osuji said healthcare services remained available across custodial facilities through qualified medical personnel, while disease surveillance, early detection and response mechanisms were being strengthened in partnership with relevant public health authorities.

She added that the Controller-General had directed a team of senior medical personnel from the Service’s National Headquarters to proceed to the facility for continued monitoring.

Osuji said the directive underscored the NCoS commitment to protecting the health, dignity and welfare of persons in custody in line with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019, and established correctional standards.

The Service urged members of the public to rely on verified information from official channels as it continues to monitor the situation and provide updates.
