The Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has called on Nigerians to protect the nation’s democratic gains and unite against forces threatening peace, security and development across the country.
In his Democracy Day message, AbdulRazaq paid tribute to the heroes of the struggle for the restoration of civil rule, especially MKO Abiola, whose sacrifice, he said, remains a defining symbol of Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The Governor noted that Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic experience over the past 27 years stands as a testament to the resilience of its people and institutions despite numerous challenges.
“As we commemorate Democracy Day (June 12) today, I join the rest of our country in paying glowing tributes to the heroes of the struggle for the restoration of civil rule to Nigeria. We remember Chief MKO Abiola, widely accepted as the symbol of that struggle, and other patriots who paid the supreme price.
“The ultimate satisfaction is that we have remained steadfast on this democratic journey for 27 unbroken years despite the rough edges.” He said.

AbdulRazaq urged citizens to remain vigilant and committed to preserving the ideals of democracy, saying Nigerians must work together to overcome threats to national stability and development.
“My message to Kwarans and fellow citizens across the nation is to stay resolute, guard our hard-earned gains jealously, and work together to defeat the evil forces threatening our peace, security and development,” AbdulRazaq said.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to deepening democratic governance and ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach all segments of society.
He also assured residents of Kwara State that ongoing efforts to tackle security challenges in parts of the state would yield positive results, adding that his government remained engaged with relevant stakeholders to restore lasting peace and secure the freedom of those still in captivity.
“Our administration remains committed to entrenching the ideals of democracy and spreading its dividends to all.
“I want to reassure Kwarans that we will see the end of the security breaches in some parts of the state. I am in constant engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure sustainable peace and safety across our communities, including freeing our compatriots still in captivity.” He stated.
Calling for unity and patriotism, AbdulRazaq said the collective efforts of citizens would strengthen the country and accelerate national progress.
“I urge us all to stay united as one great people with uncommon love for our state and country. With everyone contributing their part, Nigeria will become stronger, greater and more prosperous.” He stressed.
The NGF chairman also congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Assembly, the Judiciary, government institutions, the media and civil society organisations on the occasion of Democracy Day, describing June 12 as a celebration of Nigeria’s democratic resilience and the sacrifices that made it possible.
