The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) and San José State University, California, United States, have begun discussions on a strategic partnership aimed at expanding opportunities for Nigerian students and professionals in technology, education, innovation, and diaspora engagement.

According to a statement issued by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the partnership was explored during a meeting between NiDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the President of San José State University, Cynthia Teniente-Matson, in San José, California.

A key outcome of the discussions was the proposed Silicon Valley Tech Bridge Initiative, a summer programme at the California-based university designed to provide Nigerian students and young professionals with hands-on training in emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and medical devices.

The initiative will combine specialised academic coursework with practical industry exposure through engagements with leading technology companies such as Adobe, LinkedIn and Jabil.

Mentorship and Networking

Participants will also take part in Black Engineer Week, where they will have access to NiDCOM, San José State University Partner on Diaspora Engagement, mentorship and networking opportunities with accomplished Nigerian professionals in the diaspora.

Dabiri-Erewa described the initiative as a major step towards equipping Nigerian youths with globally competitive skills while strengthening the country’s engagement with its highly accomplished diaspora community.

I am excited about the possibilities these partnerships bring and the opportunities they will create for our young people to learn, innovate, and thrive on a global stage,” Dabiri-Erewa said.

Leadership Exchange

The statement highlighted that the meeting also examined plans for a proposed Fulbright Leadership Exchange Programme aimed at promoting academic collaboration, leadership development and institutional partnerships between Nigeria and San José State University.

Both sides discussed the creation of cultural murals on the university campus to celebrate diversity and showcase Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

President of San José State University, Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to building meaningful international partnerships that advance innovation, educational excellence and global engagement.

Both parties expressed optimism that the proposed initiatives would create new opportunities for Nigerian students, researchers, entrepreneurs and technology professionals, while further strengthening the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United States.
