Nigeria Approves 600 Military Houses, Revised Biotechnology Policy

By Temitope Mustapha, Abuja

The Federal Government has approved the acquisition of 600 four-bedroom terrace duplexes at Bristol City Development, Life Camp, Abuja, to expand housing provision for members of the Armed Forces.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Rabe Darma, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents on resolutions reached at Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting.

Darma said the approval reflected President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of military personnel, with housing identified as a key component of their wellbeing.

Darma recalled that the Council had previously sanctioned 1,156 housing units for the Armed Forces in the Federal Capital Territory, noting that subsequent approvals had raised the number to 2,656 out of the 10,000 units earmarked for military personnel.

He said the intervention reflected the Federal Government’s wider housing drive to improve access to decent accommodation for Nigerians across various segments of society.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, announced the Council’s approval of the Revised National Biotechnology Policy 2026, describing it as a major step towards advancing Nigeria’s science, technology and innovation landscape.

Udeh explained that the country’s first National Biotechnology Policy, introduced in 2001, had guided the sector for 25 years and supported advances in biomanufacturing, gene editing and biotechnology applications in health, agriculture and manufacturing.

He said rapid developments in biotechnology locally and globally had necessitated a review of the framework, leading to the development and validation of the revised policy by relevant stakeholders.

According to the minister, the new policy provides a strategic framework for biotechnology research, development, commercialisation and deployment across key sectors of the economy, with emphasis on climate-smart technologies, precision agriculture, manufacturing, gene editing and medical genomics.
