Nigeria, Cyprus Bilateral Relations Enter New Phase

By Margaret Ebeshi

Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with Cyprus are set for renewed engagement following the presentation of Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Israel, with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, Ambassador Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, to the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.

The ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, Cyprus, marking the formal commencement of Ambassador Ufochukwu’s tour of duty as Nigeria’s principal diplomatic representative to the Mediterranean island nation.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Ufochukwu conveyed the fraternal greetings of President Bola Tinubu to President Christodoulides and expressed her commitment to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

The presentation of the Letters of Credence formally accredits the Nigerian envoy to represent the country and serve as an official channel of communication between Abuja and Nicosia.

In his remarks, President Christodoulides welcomed Ambassador Ufochukwu and reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between Cyprus and Nigeria, describing their relationship as ‘one rooted in shared historical experiences, common principles and enduring people-to-people connections.’

He noted that Cyprus recognised Nigeria’s significant role in West Africa and across the African continent, particularly its contributions to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.

The Cypriot President also expressed his government’s readiness to work closely with Nigeria to strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

According to him, “the Government of Cyprus stands ready to work closely with the Government of Nigeria to advance relations in areas of mutual interest.”

President Christodoulides identified the economy, trade and investment, education, and political dialogue as key areas for expanding bilateral cooperation. He also emphasised the need for both countries to address common challenges through bilateral and multilateral engagement.

The renewed diplomatic engagement presents opportunities for Nigeria and Cyprus to broaden their partnership beyond traditional diplomatic relations, particularly through economic cooperation, educational exchanges and increased private-sector engagement.

For Nigeria, Ambassador Ufochukwu’s accreditation is expected to strengthen the country’s diplomatic presence in the Mediterranean region while creating opportunities to advance the interests of Nigerian businesses, students, professionals and members of the diaspora in Cyprus.

Similarly, closer engagement could provide a platform for Cypriot businesses and investors to explore opportunities in Nigeria, particularly in sectors where both countries have complementary interests.

Ambassador Ufochukwu is expected to commence engagements with Cypriot government officials, business leaders and members of the Nigerian community as part of efforts to translate the goodwill expressed during the ceremony into concrete outcomes.

The presentation of her Letters of Credence marks a significant step in Nigeria-Cyprus relations, with both countries seeking to build on their longstanding friendship to promote mutual economic interests, educational cooperation and stronger diplomatic ties.

The ceremony was attended by senior Cypriot government officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission.
