President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations with Brazil, describing the $1 billion Green Imperative Programme as a pivotal project aimed at transforming Nigeria’s agricultural sector through advanced technology and targeted capacity-building initiatives.
The President, who received the Vice President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin, at the State House, Abuja, on Tuesday, described the programme as a flagship initiative of the deepening partnership between the two nations.
“The landmark $1 billion Green Imperative Programme, a bilateral agricultural mechanisation initiative anchored by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in collaboration with Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and private sector stakeholders, stands as a flagship of this renewed partnership,” the President stated on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, @officialABAT.
He explained that the initiative aims to revolutionise Nigeria’s agricultural value chain by facilitating technology transfer, strengthening capacity building, and establishing service centres across the country.
President Tinubu, who was accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the high-level meeting, said the visit by the Brazilian delegation marked a shift in relations from mere expressions of goodwill to tangible steps towards shared economic and developmental goals.
“Our engagement reaffirmed the enduring ties between Nigeria and Brazil—two diverse democracies linked by shared values, historical connections, and a common ambition for inclusive, people-driven growth,” Tinubu said.
The President identified food security, trade and industrialisation, energy transition, healthcare delivery, innovation, defence cooperation, and cultural exchange as among the strategic sectors in which both countries are collaborating, including agribusiness.
President Tinubu further noted that Nigeria is preparing for active participation in the forthcoming COP30 Climate Conference in Belém, Brazil, presenting an additional opportunity to strengthen cooperation on climate initiatives and sustainability efforts.
“We also look forward to Nigeria’s active participation at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, as both nations work to scale up collaboration on climate action, energy transition, and environmental resilience,” he said.
He praised the Nigeria–Brazil partnership, noting its expansion from renewable energy initiatives to collaborations in the creative industries, and described the revitalised cooperation as being rooted in shared prosperity and outcome-focused diplomacy.
“Nigeria remains firmly committed to building resilient South–South partnerships anchored in mutual respect, shared prosperity, and tangible results for our citizens,” the President affirmed.
President Tinubu concluded with a message of solidarity in Portuguese, echoing Brazil’s motto for unity: “As our Brazilian friends say, ‘Juntos somos mais fortes’—together we are stronger.”
