Nigeria to Get National Regional Policy

By Timothy Choji, Abuja

Nigeria’s National Economic Council (NEC) says plans are underway for the provision of a national regional policy for the country.

The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf revealed this while briefing Journalists at the end of the meeting of the Council presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Yusuf disclosed that the Minister of Regional Deployment, Abubakar Momoh briefed the Council on the merits and demerits of the proposed policy during the NEC meeting for June.

He enumerated reasons the policy is important as he also gave an insight into what needs to be done, to bring the law into fruition.

The Minister of Regional Development made a presentation on the Regional Development Policy and in his presentation; the Council recognised that Nigeria needs the National regional Development Policy (NRDP) now because of persistent partial inequalities, fragmented regional intervention and the need to be in tandem with international best practice.

The Governor also stressed that justification for the NRDP includes providing an oversight for the formulation and implementation of policies and frameworks to guide regional development in order to ensure alignment with national goals.

“It will also coordinate the formulation and implementation of development master plans for the regional commissions in collaboration with the States of the federation.

“As well as help supervise the operations of the regional development commissions that exist in Nigeria,” he stated.

Governor Yusuf said NEC directed the Minister of Regional Development to share the proposed regional development policy document with State Governors in order to digest and also make inputs.
