Nigerian Army Steps Up Security Focus in Oyo

By Nokai Origin, Abuja

The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Auwalu Mahmuda, has urged troops of the newly established 321 Artillery Regiment in Iseyin, Oyo State, to deal decisively with security threats, maintain vigilance and prevent criminal elements from gaining a foothold within their area of responsibility.

Major General Mahmuda gave the charge on 17 October 2026 during his maiden operational visit to the regiment’s temporary location, where he highlighted security concerns around the area, particularly the unit’s proximity to Old Oyo National Park.

A statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, 2 Division Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, disclosed that the GOC urged troops to take all necessary operational measures against security threats, maintain professional conduct and bring glory to the Nigerian Army.

Major General Mahmuda also charged the regiment to perform its artillery role effectively and maintain cordial relations with its host community.

The GOC expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff for expanding the Nigerian Army, noting that “the establishment of additional formations and units would strengthen the service’s capacity to respond to contemporary security challenges.”

The visit also enabled Major General Mahmuda to interact with troops deployed across various locations within the Division’s area of responsibility and reinforce the need for newly established formations to settle in and carry out their assigned responsibilities effectively.
