Nigerian Government to create awareness on Modern Day Slavery

 The Nigeria Media has been urged to create more awareness on modern day slavery to save youths from becoming victims of slavery.

Modern day slavery includes but is not limited to, human trafficking, child labor, forced marriage among others . It is a major concern for the Nigerian government.

As such the Federal Ministry of information and culture in collaboration with UNESCO and other stake holders , commemorated the event in Abuja, Nigeria to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in the memory of Nigerians .

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed said considering the realities of modern day slavery that youths are faced with, which include human trafficking, child labor and forced marriage, curbing modern day slavery should be the priority of every one.

“Against this back drop it is my sincere hope that the campaign against modern day slavery does not end here, I wish to  task our media organization to ensure the message is sustained on air and it reaches the nooks and crannies of Nigeria so as to create the needed national awareness of this menace” He said.

 The secretary General Nigerian commission for UNESCO Mr  Olagunju  Lateef emphasized on rehabilitating the victims and educating them  on the effects of modern slavery.

“The Nigerian government has demonstrated significant efforts in combating human trafficking in the country by creating the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in persons NAPTIP, while laying serious emphasis on rehabilitating the victims and educating the citizens on the evil effects of every act connected to modern slavery”.  He said.

The international  Labor Organization ILO reports that about 40 million people  world wide are victims of modern slavery .In addition more than 150  million children are subjected to child labor accounting for almost one in ten children around the world .
