Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) boss, Musa Kida, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the payment of financial rewards due to D’Tigress and their officials, following their 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket triumph.
Kida described the gesture as a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to the development of sports and the welfare of Nigerian athletes.
According to him, the timely disbursement of the rewards shows that athletes’ welfare remains a priority of the Tinubu administration, adding that such support would serve as motivation for other national teams to strive for excellence.

The NBBF President said the recognition and reward for D’Tigress would further encourage the players and officials to maintain the high standards that have established Nigeria as a dominant force in African women’s basketball.
Kida also called on corporate organisations and other stakeholders to emulate the Federal Government’s support for sports, stressing that sustained investment was crucial to consolidating Nigeria’s dominance in African basketball.
He reaffirmed the NBBF’s commitment to building on the success of D’Tigress, assuring that the federation would continue to provide the necessary support for the team to achieve greater success.
Kida said that D’Tigress would continue to work hard to win more honours for Nigeria and make the country proud on the international stage.
Reacting to the development, captain of D’Tigress Amy Okonkwo expressed gratitude to President Tinubu, the First Lady and the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

“On behalf of the entire D’Tigress team, I want to specially thank our dear President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for this show of love and support,” Okonkwo said.
“We are more than grateful to Mr President, the First Lady, and the leadership of the National Sports Commission, led by the Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade.”
We are also very grateful to the Nigeria Basketball Federation and its President, Engr. Musa Kida. This has shown us that Nigerian sports is taking a major positive shift in administration and that we truly have a sports-loving President,” Okonkwo mentioned.
