Nigerian fashion designer, Omosalewa Ogunjimi has been named Real Leather Stay Different (RLSD) Africa 2026 Most Commendable Designer.
Ogunjimi clinched the overall prize with ‘EXUVIA’, a design inspired by the human spine, ribcage and the natural process of moulting.
Her piece integrates leather into the garment’s structure and features modular components that enable it to be reconfigured into various forms.

Speaking on the concept, Ogunjimi said the work embodies her approach to merging structure, functionality and narrative.
“EXUVIA is a reflection of my design language where structure, functionality and storytelling come together to create something distinct,” she stated.
This year’s African edition drew entries from more than 12 countries across the continent, with 15 designers progressing to the final round.
The finalists came from Kenya, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Uganda, and competed in the Apparel, Accessories and Footwear categories.
A six-member international judging panel assessed the entries on originality, concept, relevance, sustainability and commercial viability.
Lead judge, Preston Viswamo described Ogunjimi’s submission as “spectacular,” commending its modular construction and prototyping.
Nigeria was strongly represented in the Apparel category, with three of the five finalists Ogunjimi, Clara Udegbe and Emeka Oguejiofor hailing from the country.
As the 2026 African winner, Ogunjimi will go on to represent the continent at the global RLSD competition in Bangkok, Thailand, from 27 to 29 October, 2026.
The 15 African finalists will also gather again in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in November for the RLSD Africa 2026 Continental Showcase, where winners in the other categories will be announced.
