The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and AKADEMIYA2063 have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen collaboration in artificial intelligence (AI), climate and weather data analytics, and evidence-based research to strengthen climate resilience, agricultural productivity, and food security in Nigeria.
The agreement was signed by the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, along with AKADEMIYA2063’s Managing Director, Dr Debisi Araba, and the organisation’s Director of Data Intelligence and Governance, Dr Racine Ly.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Prof. Anosike said the partnership underscored NiMet’s commitment to embracing emerging technologies to improve weather and climate services.
He noted that the agency was already taking deliberate steps to integrate artificial intelligence into its operations.

“NiMet is positioning itself for the future by embracing artificial intelligence and digital innovation,” he revealed.
Prof. Anosike disclosed that the agency had established an AI Research Team to explore the application of AI and machine learning in weather forecasting, climate services and operational efficiency.
According to him, “the partnership with AKADEMIYA2063 will further strengthen these efforts,” enabling the agency to deliver more innovative and efficient meteorological services.
For his part, the Managing Director of AKADEMIYA2063, Dr. Debisi Araba, described the collaboration as a milestone in advancing data-driven development across Africa.
“This collaboration is an important step towards strengthening Africa’s capacity in data, analytics and evidence-based policymaking,” Araba said.
He highlighted that “combining AKADEMIYA2063’s expertise with NiMet’s meteorological capabilities will deliver practical solutions for climate resilience, food security and sustainable development.”
As part of the agreement, both organisations will collaborate on applying artificial intelligence to climate monitoring, seasonal forecasting, early warning systems and evidence-based decision-making to improve climate services and agricultural planning in Nigeria.
The MoU also provides for the establishment of a Joint Technical Committee, which will work closely with NiMet’s AI Research Team to identify priority areas of collaboration, coordinate the implementation of agreed programmes and develop joint initiatives that advance AI research, climate services, innovation and sustainable development.
The partnership is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to deploy artificial intelligence and climate data in addressing weather-related challenges, improving agricultural planning and supporting national food security.
