The Director General and CEO of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, has congratulated Edo Queens on their victory at the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament.
Edo Queens secured the regional title after a dramatic 2-2 draw against Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies, before emerging 4-1 winners in the ensuing penalty shootout.
Shaibu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Ben Ogbemudia, described the team’s triumph as a proud moment for Nigerian women’s football and Edo State.
The NIS Director General, who is also the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State, commended the players and technical crew for their determination, resilience and impressive performance throughout the tournament.
He said the victory demonstrated the strength and growing competitiveness of Nigerian women’s football on the regional stage.
According to him, Edo Queens’ success is particularly significant as it has earned the team a place in the forthcoming CAF Women’s Champions League finals.
Shaibu urged the players and their coaches to remain focused and maintain the same level of commitment as they prepare to represent Nigeria on the continental stage.
He assured that the National Institute for Sports would continue to support initiatives aimed at developing women’s football and promoting the growth of sports in Nigeria.
The NIS boss expressed confidence that Edo Queens would build on their WAFU-B success and make Nigeria proud at the CAF Women’s Champions League finals.
