Vin Oliji, Abuja

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), with support from the European Union, has concluded a three-day Top Management Workshop, focused on reviewing the 2019–2023 National Border Management Strategy (NBMS) and its Action Plan in preparation for the next policy cycle, 2027–2031.

In a statement issued by the Service Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, the workshop held from 27 – 30 September 2026, provided a strategic platform for NIS top management and partners to review progress, exchange perspectives and consider key priorities towards strengthening Nigeria’s border management framework and providing a basis for aligning the review with the priorities of the next policy cycle.

Speaking at the workshop, the Comptroller-General of NIS, Kemi Nandap, stressed the need for the next strategy to be based on credible migration data, effective implementation mechanisms and sustained inter-agency collaboration.

She said the review should provide a framework capable of responding to emerging border management and security challenges, while positioning Nigeria to provide leadership in integrated border management across Africa.

The engagement featured strategic discussions, technical sessions, group presentations and consolidation of review outcomes.

This was followed by an NIS Executive Management Endorsement Session to review and endorse key recommendations, prioritise interventions, consider financing options and validate the proposed strategic direction for the 2027–2031 policy cycle.

He noted that the workshop reinforces the commitment of the Nigeria Immigration Service and its partners to sustained collaboration and continuous improvement in Border Management.
