The Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, has flagged off the construction of a new ultra-modern National Control Centre in Osogbo, Osun State, as part of efforts to strengthen the management and operation of Nigeria’s national electricity grid.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Wednesday, September 30, was performed on behalf of Vice President Kashim Shettima by his Senior Special Assistant on Legal and Compliance Matters, Bashir Maidugu.
Maidugu said the project reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to developing critical national infrastructure under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, said the existing National Control Centre has been in operation for about 60 years, making the new facility necessary tMeet the demands of Nigeria’s evolving power system.

Tegbe also called for greater collaboration and support for NISO to enable it to deliver reliable and efficient electricity nationwide.
The Chairman of the NISO Board, Dr Adesegun Akin-Olugbade, described the project as a major milestone in implementing the institutional framework established by the Electricity Act 2023.
NISO Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abdu Bello Mohammed, said the new Centre would improve grid visibility, real-time monitoring and security, while enabling operators to respond more quickly and accurately to system disturbances.
He stated that the facility would provide the advanced technological and operational environment required for a modern and efficient electricity system operator.
