No Compromise on Food Safety Regulations — NAHCON

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has reiterated its commitment to upholding food safety regulations during the 2026 Hajj exercise, stressing that the welfare and wellbeing of Nigerian pilgrims remain a top priority.

The Commission disclosed that Saudi health authorities continue to enforce strict food safety standards, particularly in view of the prevailing weather conditions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

According to NAHCON, some dinner meals served on the night of 27 May 2026 failed to meet the required handling and packaging standards and were immediately rejected in collaboration with the Saudi health authorities.

To mitigate the situation, the service support company provided alternative light refreshments to the affected pilgrims. Members of the NAHCON Board also visited and briefed affected state officials on the development.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of NAHCON, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, has directed the Security Committee to investigate the caterers involved, as well as individuals linked to the award of the contracts.

In a related development, the Chairman also instructed the Central Security Committee to investigate tour operators alleged to have brought in more pilgrims than officially registered while exploiting innocent pilgrims. He warned that any operator found guilty after investigations would face sanctions, including the withdrawal of operational licences.

NAHCON further disclosed that arrangements are underway for immediate refunds to pilgrims affected by the meal incident.

The Commission appreciated the understanding and patience of the pilgrims and reassured them of its continued commitment to their welfare throughout the Hajj exercise.
