NYSC Marks 53rd Anniversary with Unity Call to Nigerians

By Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State has urged Nigerians, particularly youths, to remain committed to building a stronger, united and prosperous nation as the Scheme marked its 53rd Anniversary.

The State Coordinator of the Scheme in Anambra, Mrs Pauline Ojisua, made the call during a commemorative ceremony held at the Engr. Ebele Ofunneamaka Okeke Federal Secretariat Complex in Awka.

Speaking at the event, Ojisua described the anniversary as an opportunity for reflection on the achievements and contributions of the NYSC to national development since its establishment in 1973.

According to her, the Scheme has continued to serve as a veritable platform for promoting patriotism, national unity, youth development and selfless service across Nigeria.

This NYSC@53 ceremony symbolises not only celebration but also our collective commitment to the ideals of patriotism, discipline and national integration upon which the Scheme was founded,” she said.

The coordinator noted that the anniversary celebration was deliberately low-key because the Scheme had celebrated its golden jubilee extensively during its 50th anniversary.

She expressed gratitude to God for sustaining the NYSC through decades of growth and service, while commending stakeholders, staff and corps members for their dedication and contributions to the success of the Scheme in Anambra State and nationwide.

Ojisua also called on Nigerians to continue supporting programmes and initiatives that promote national cohesion and development.

As part of the event, the Assistant Director of Community Development Service (CDS), Mr Anthony Ibekwe, delivered a presentation highlighting the developmental strides, achievements and milestones recorded by the NYSC since inception.

The celebration also featured a spoken word performance titled “NYSC@53 – A Journey of National Service” by corps member Ajayi Osayi Ruth, which underscored the Scheme’s impact on national integration and development.

The event ended with the cutting of the NYSC@53 anniversary cake by the State Coordinator alongside staff and corps members.
