Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Musa Kwankwaso, have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in a development seen as a significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
The move is expected to strengthen the NDC’s position as it prepares for the 2027 general elections, adding to the party’s growing national influence.
Both leaders were presented with their membership cards in Abuja, the nation’s capital, following a closed-door meeting with party executives, an event that drew reactions from supporters.
Their defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) comes amid widening political realignments among opposition figures seeking a stronger coalition.
Welcoming the duo, former Bayelsa State governor and NDC national leader Seriake Dickson described their entry as a turning point for the party’s vision of national transformation.

He emphasised that the NDC remains united and free from internal divisions, positioning itself as a stable platform capable of delivering governance.

Addressing party members, Obi urged supporters to avoid internal conflicts and legal battles, stressing the importance of unity and focus.
He maintained that the party’s priority should be addressing the pressing challenges facing Nigerians, including insecurity and economic hardship.
According to him, the NDC is determined to build a government that restores confidence and improves the quality of life for citizens.
Kwankwaso, on his part, called for mass participation, encouraging Nigerians to register with the party as it expands its grassroots presence nationwide.
He disclosed that his supporters had already begun the registration process, signaling early mobilisation efforts.
Political observers say the entry of the two prominent figures could reshape alliances and intensify competition among major political parties in the lead-up to the polls.
