One Dead, 11 Missing After Mudslide Hits China’s Jiangxi Province

One person has been confirmed dead while 11 others remain missing after torrential rainfall triggered a mudslide in Jiangxi Province, China, early Saturday, local authorities said.

The incident occurred at about 4 a.m. local time (2000 GMT Friday) in Gaoping Town, Suichuan County, following heavy rains associated with Typhoon Saudel, according to a statement issued by the county authorities.

The mudslide damaged 12 houses in the area, while emergency responders launched search and rescue operations for those reported missing.

China’s state broadcaster CCTV reported that more than 10 people were trapped after the landslide struck the town.

Authorities have continued rescue efforts as heavy rainfall linked to the typhoon poses further risks of flooding and landslides in affected areas.

Officials have not yet provided details on the identity of the deceased or those missing, while the full extent of the damage is still being assessed.
