The National Police Day 2026 was marked by the Nigeria Police Force with tributes to the courage and sacrifices of its officers, alongside renewed calls for reforms and improved welfare.

The annual event, celebrated every April 7 across the country, featured parades, award presentations, and community engagement activities aimed at strengthening the relationship between the police and the public.

At ceremonies held in the Federal Capital Territory and across various states, government officials and security stakeholders commended police personnel for their role in maintaining law and order despite challenging conditions.

Speaking at the event, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, paid tribute to officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, describing them as heroes whose sacrifices continue to inspire national service.

IGP Disu said accountability under his leadership would be fair and applied without exception, adding that the leadership would stand firmly with officers who uphold professionalism and integrity.

“Every life lost in service is a debt on our conscience. Every fallen officer is a call to do better, to be better, and to serve better. To their families, I say this: your sacrifice is not invisible, your pain is not ignored.

“Under my leadership, your loved ones will not be remembered only during ceremonies, but in the standards we uphold every single day.

“To the officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force across our country, I speak to you today not just as your Inspector-General of Police, but as one of you. I know the risks you take, the sacrifices you make, and the pressure you face.

“I salute your courage and recognise your dedication. However, this moment demands honesty, the Nigeria Police Force must rise above indiscipline and misconduct. We must rise above every action that diminishes the honour of our uniform.

“Let me be unequivocal: rank will not shield wrongdoing. We will improve your welfare, strengthen your capacity, and ensure you are properly equipped.”

While acknowledging the contributions of the force, some officers who spoke to Voice of Nigeria emphasised the need for sustained reforms, better funding, modern equipment, and improved welfare packages to enhance operational efficiency.

They also stressed the importance of community policing and stronger collaboration between citizens and law enforcement agencies as critical steps toward addressing insecurity in the country.

Members of the public were encouraged to support the police by providing timely information and fostering mutual trust to ensure safer communities.

National Police Day serves as a platform to recognise the vital role of the police in safeguarding lives and property, while also reflecting on measures needed to strengthen the nation’s security architecture.
