The Nigeria Police Force has presented insurance and welfare benefits totalling ₦2.317 billion to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers, reaffirming its commitment to the families of personnel who lost their lives in active service.
The cheques were presented on Thursday, under the Group Life Assurance, Group Personal Accident and IGP Family Welfare Schemes, covering insurance policy years 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2024/2025.
Speaking at the presentation, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, said the event was not merely about financial payments but about honouring officers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.
He said; “Today, we are not merely presenting cheques; we are honouring the memory of Police Officers who gave their lives in service to our nation and reaffirming our commitment to the families they left behind.”
Disu said the beneficiaries represented families of officers who had served the nation under difficult and dangerous circumstances, stressing that their sacrifices must not be forgotten.
According to him, some of the payments included outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies following earlier partial settlements.
“These are legitimate entitlements arising from the service and sacrifice of our fallen personnel,” the IGP said, stressing that the exercise demonstrated that “the Nigeria Police Force will not abandon the families of those who paid the supreme price in our service.”
He specifically recalled personnel attacked at Buni-Yadi in Yobe State, members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit killed during a rescue mission in Zamfara State, and, most recently, 10 personnel ambushed and killed during an operation in Kebbi State.
“These courage reminds us of the demands of policing and the price our personnel sometimes pay to protect the lives and property of others,” Disu said.

He urge the beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly, particularly for the education, welfare and future prospects of children and other dependants left behind.
The IGP also urged insurance partners to settle claims promptly, stressing that insurance benefits were more than commercial obligations for families who had lost their breadwinners.
“Insurance benefits are not merely commercial claims; for families who have lost their breadwinners, they can be a vital lifeline,” he said.
Disu urged serving officers and men to draw strength from the courage of their fallen colleagues and remain committed to professionalism, integrity and dedication in the service of Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, ACP Lydia Ameh of the Force Insurance Unit described the presentation as a fulfilment of institutional responsibility and a recognition of the sacrifices made by fallen officers.
She commended the IGP for what she described as compassionate and people-centred leadership, saying his administration had demonstrated that personnel welfare should translate into tangible support.
Addressing the families of the fallen officers, Ameh said, “You have not been forgotten,” while acknowledging that no amount of money could replace their loved ones.
The Force said the initiative was part of broader efforts to improve awareness and access to insurance benefits.
According to the IGP, the Force Insurance Unit had, within two months, visited six Commands and more than 50 Divisions and Formations in the Federal Capital Territory to sensitise personnel and their families on available insurance benefits and claims procedures.
The event ended with prayers for the repose of the souls of the fallen officers, comfort for their families and protection for serving police personnel across the country.
