President Tinubu to Attend 2026 UN General Assembly

Temitope Mustapha, Abuja

The Nigerian Leader, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will attend the 2026 United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this September, where he will present Nigeria’s reform agenda to the international community and participate in high-level engagements on energy, education and healthcare.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed this to Journalists on Wednesday after meeting with President Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, revealing that President Tinubu had agreed
to attend the global gathering and had confirmed his participation in the General Assembly and selected side events.

According to Ibrahim, “The president has generously agreed to attend the UNGA meeting of the United Nations this year. This is significant because Mr. President has a speech to give to the whole world about its reform success in Nigeria.

He also revealed that President Tinubu’s address would be delivered at a time convenient for Nigerian audiences to follow live, saying the President will scheduled to speak at about 10:45 a.m. New York time, corresponding to approximately 2:00 p.m. in Nigeria.

Beyond the General Assembly, Ambassador Ibrahim said President Tinubu had demonstrated a strong commitment to strengthening border policing across West Africa, describing the issue as a priority area for collaboration between Nigeria and the United Nations.

“The President reflected his commitment to border policing. This time around, the President will be working with the United Nations to look into the West African border,” he said.

Describing the region’s porous borders as a major security concern, the Nigerian envoy said President Tinubu had directed immediate action to advance regional border security, adding that the UN would be engaged to support the initiative.

“The President is going to put a lot of effort into border policing for West African countries. He gave specific directives on what to do instantly, and I will be going back to the UN to inform everyone about the concern to take West Africa as a case study of border policing and ensure that our security is well guaranteed,” he said.

He added that the United Nations was established to address cross-border and international security challenges, expressing confidence that the organisation would support efforts to strengthen border policing across the sub-region.

On the President’s engagements at the General Assembly, Ibrahim declined to comment on whether President Tinubu would hold a bilateral meeting with United States President Donald Trump but assured that the Nigerian leader would occupy a prominent position during the Assembly.

“I can tell you clearly that President Tinubu will be sitting very, very close to President Trump in the front row of the United Nations General Assembly,” he added.
