The landmark event marks the transition from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the new Nigeria Revenue Service, reflecting a major reform in national revenue administration.

The transition from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the Nigeria Revenue Service reflects Tinubu-led administration’s strategic restructuring of Nigeria’s tax system, designed to enhance efficiency, broaden the revenue base, and improve compliance in an evolving economic ecosystems

The reform is aligned with the Tinubu administration’s broader fiscal policy agenda under the Renewed Hope framework, which prioritises increased non-oil revenue mobilisation, transparency, and the digitalisation of tax processes.

The restructuring of the NRS reflects ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to modernise tax administration, streamline collection processes across agencies, and position Nigeria’s revenue system in line with global best practices.

NRS plays a pivotal role in funding critical infrastructure, social services, and economic reforms, as the government seeks to reduce dependence on oil revenues and improve fiscal sustainability.

President Tinubu signed the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act 2025 in June 2025, officially renaming the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).

The rebranding, unveiled on January 1, 2026, aims to modernise tax administration, unify revenue collection, and strengthen the nation’s financial framework.
