Rivers Governor Withdraws From APC Governorship Primaries

Iquo Williams, Port Harcourt

The Governor of Rivers State, South-South Nigeria, has formally announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress, APC, Governorship primaries in the state, saying his decision was guided by the need to promote “peace, stability, and unity” above personal ambition.

In a strongly worded and emotional statement addressed to the people of Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara said his choice came after “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family, political associates, and trusted allies.

He stressed that leadership sometimes demands sacrifice, especially when the collective interest of the state is at stake.

Governor Fubara stated that although the decision was difficult, he remained committed to supporting whoever eventually emerges as the APC governorship candidate, insisting that the party must remain united ahead of the crucial elections.

The Governor acknowledged the disappointment many supporters may feel following his withdrawal, particularly those who invested their time, energy, and resources into his political movement.

He praised their loyalty and unwavering belief in his leadership, assuring them that their sacrifices were not in vain.

“My silence over this period was deliberate and strategic,” he said. Without revealing details, Governor Fubara noted that certain realities were better handled with wisdom and restraint rather than public confrontation.

As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace,” he remarked, in what many observers described as a subtle reference to internal political tensions and negotiations within the state’s power structure

Despite stepping away from the primaries, the Governor firmly rejected any suggestion that his withdrawal was motivated by fear or political weakness.

According to him, the decision was made purely out of conviction and a desire to preserve harmony in Rivers State.

“I stepped aside not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” he declared.

Governor Fubara also expressed gratitude to the leadership of the APC for providing him with a political platform throughout the process.

He specifically appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and encouragement during the period of consultations.

Political analysts believe the Governor’s withdrawal could significantly reshape the political landscape in Rivers State, especially within the APC where issues of succession and party control have remained a subject of intense debate in recent months.

Supporters and political stakeholders across the state have continued reacting to the announcement, with many describing the governor’s decision as a major sacrifice aimed at preventing further division within the party and the state.

Govenror Fubara concluded his address by reaffirming his commitment to continue serving the people of Rivers State until the expiration of his current tenure, while urging APC members and supporters to remain steadfast and united in pursuit of a stronger future for the state.
