Russia and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
This follows a meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko and Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to Russia, Joseph Olusola Iji.
The meeting took place in Moscow, where Ambassador Iji formally presented letter of credence, marking the beginning of his diplomatic mission in the Russian Federation.
Discussions focused on advancing the long-standing friendly relationship between both countries and exploring new opportunities for cooperation across key sectors.
Officials from both sides reviewed the current state of Russia-Nigeria relations and emphasized the need to intensify political dialogue.
They also discussed measures aimed at deepening collaboration in trade, economic development, science and technology, as well as humanitarian exchanges.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said the talks covered “the further development of traditionally friendly Russian-Nigerian relations,” including efforts to strengthen bilateral interaction in political, economic, scientific and humanitarian fields.
The meeting comes as Moscow and Abuja continue to explore areas of mutual interest amid growing engagement between Russia and African nations.
New Chapter
Ambassador Iji’s presentation of credentials is an important diplomatic step that officially initiates his tenure as Nigeria’s representative in Russia.
His appointment is expected to contribute to efforts by both governments to expand cooperation and promote stronger institutional links.

Nigeria and Russia have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, with cooperation spanning education, energy, trade, security and cultural exchanges.
Analysts say the latest engagement reflects a shared interest in expanding strategic partnerships and unlocking new opportunities for economic and technological collaboration.
The discussions underscore the willingness of both countries to build on existing ties and pursue closer cooperation in areas that support national development and mutual prosperity.
