Russian forces have launched a missile attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in the early hours of Sunday, with debris from intercepted missiles sparking fires in several districts, city officials said.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said debris ignited fires in at least three districts of the capital. One blaze engulfed the seventh and eighth floors of a multi-storey residential building in the city’s central district.
Ukraine’s Air Force said; “Russia had targeted Kyiv with ballistic missiles. Air raid sirens sounded across the capital, but the alert was lifted about 50 minutes later after the military withdrew its warning of an incoming missile attack.’
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Witnesses reported hearing a series of explosions across the city, while videos circulating on unofficial social media channels appeared to show fires burning in several locations.
The latest strike came two days after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Russia was likely to intensify its attacks on Ukraine over the following 48 hours.
