Senate Assures Nigerians of Legislative Backing for Security Reforms

By Ukamaka Okafor, Abuja

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has assured Nigerians of the National Assembly’s commitment to providing legislative backing for security reforms aimed at restoring lasting peace and stability across the country.

Akpabio gave the assurance during an interdenominational church service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

He said the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes and heroines continued to inspire national unity and collective resolve to rebuild the country for future generations.

The Senate President noted that Nigeria’s strength lay in its diversity, describing the country as one of the most linguistically and culturally diverse nations in the world, with citizens of different faiths coexisting.

Akpabio stated that concerted efforts were ongoing to reposition Nigeria as one of the most peaceful and secure nations in Africa, adding that the foundations being laid would serve as stepping stones for generations yet unborn.

He offered prayers for the repose of the souls of fallen military personnel and called for continued divine protection for officers and men of the Armed Forces as they safeguarded the nation.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retired), described the gathering as a moment of worship, reflection and remembrance, symbolising national unity and shared commitment to peace and security.

General Musa commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support for the Armed Forces and other security agencies, particularly in the areas of welfare and operational capacity.

He said the sacrifices of fallen heroes would not be forgotten, noting that their names remained etched in the nation’s history and in the hearts of Nigerians.

The Defence Minister acknowledged the resilience of the families of fallen personnel and assured them of the nation’s continued support.

He urged Nigerians to remain united, stressing that collective effort and patriotism were essential to building a better country.

General Musa also praised the dedication of serving personnel and their families, especially spouses, for their sacrifices and steadfast support, assuring them that their welfare would not be neglected.

In his sermon, the officiating minister, Most Reverend Dr Uche Dan Okafor, urged Nigerians not to lose hope, assuring them that God remained with the nation despite prevailing challenges.

He encouraged members of the Armed Forces and citizens to remain steadfast, describing their sacrifices as meaningful, and prayed for divine protection and spiritual security for Nigeria in 2026.

Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day is observed annually on January 15 to honour fallen heroes, recognise serving and retired veterans, and mobilise support for the welfare of personnel and the families of the deceased.
